If you want to be a better runner, this is the club for you

Winchester Running Club — road, cross-country and trail running. Coached training on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Juniors from 8, seniors and masters, one club.

Is this the club for you?

Everyone here is trying to get better. That is the thing we have in common — not speed, not age, not how long anyone has been running.

Sessions are coached and structured, and they run in pace groups — usually four or five of them, and there is always a slower group. On a repetition session everyone works for the same distance or the same time rather than at the same speed, so you run your own effort rather than chasing somebody else. Nobody gets left behind.

You will fit in if you are already running regularly. If you are coming back to running or starting from scratch, we may not be the right first step — Winchester parkrun on a Saturday morning is free, friendly and the best place to begin.

Who you will be coached by

Training is designed in partnership with RunningWithUs and led on the ground by qualified run leaders and coaches in running fitness — including Nick Anderson, a UKA Level 4 endurance coach who manages GB squads and has coached athletes from beginners through to Olympians. Sessions are structured across the season rather than improvised. Meet the coaching team.

What that actually looks like

Raced the road league last season

91/ 253

309 finishes across the twelve Hampshire fixtures. Winning four divisions takes a squad, not a handful of quick people.

145/ 253

Our Chair started running at 54. Our Club Secretary started at 48, and her father still races competitively at 86.

Club records

Getting better at any age

In athletics, masters means 35 or over, and at Winchester that is where much of our competitive strength sits.

Most clubs run a championship where the fastest runner wins. We run two. Alongside the main Grand Prix we score a second, age-adjusted competition across all twelve Hampshire Road Race League races, graded against what is possible at your age — so a well-run 10k at 62 can outscore a quicker one at 32. It is the difference between a competition you take part in and one you can actually win.

Our club records are kept by age group for the same reason, and every award we have presented is on the club honours page.

The rest of it

And then everybody goes for coffee

The training is the reason most people turn up. It is rarely the reason they stay.

There are long runs on Sunday mornings organised between members, a monthly handicap race anyone can win, a Christmas relay, an awards dinner in December, and a great deal of standing about in car parks talking about shoes.

You do not have to do any of it. But it is there, and it is the easiest way to end up knowing two hundred people in Winchester.
