Where we meet

Everywhere the club trains and races, what happens there, and where to park. Sessions move with the season and the weather — check the WhatsApp group before you set off.

Our venues

Gaterfield is home. The others come into use in winter, for cross country, for the track, or for the monthly handicap.

  • Gaterfield

    Gaterfield

Garnier Rd, Winchester SO23 9QG, UK

Access is off Garnier Road. Park in Kingsgate Road or at East Winchester Park and Ride. Floods after heavy rain — check the WhatsApp group before setting off.

  • Garnier Road Car Park (St Catherine's Hill)

Garnier Road Car Park (St Catherine's Hill)

    Garnier Road, Winchester, SO23 9PA

The rendezvous for St Catherine's Hill sessions — the Garnier Road car park serving Cadence at The Handlebar Cafe, not the hill itself. Park at Bar End Park and Ride if it is full.

  • South Park and Ride

    South Park and Ride

Unnamed Road, Winchester SO21 2BB, UK

  • Badger Farm Meadows

    Winchester

At the bottom of Whiteshute Ridge, by the footbridge over the railway — not up on the ridge itself.

  • Winchester Athletics Stadium, Bar End

    Bar End Road, Winchester

The 400m track at Bar End, alongside Winchester Sport & Leisure Park. Used for track sessions and open meetings.

  • Harestock Bus Stop, Stoney Lane

    Stoney Lane, Winchester

The start of the Harestock Handicap, first Thursday of the month. Park in St Matthews or Vernham Road.

Gaterfield, Garnier Road

Tuesday and Thursday, 5:45pm juniors and middle distance, 7:00pm seniors. All year round — this is home.

Gaterfield is a grass field off Garnier Road, south of the city centre near the water meadows. Access is off Garnier Road; park in Kingsgate Road or at East Winchester Park and Ride. Spikes or off-road shoes are useful here but not essential to start with.

In the wet. After heavy rain Gaterfield floods and sessions relocate — usually to the Garnier Road car park or the South Park and Ride. This is announced in the club WhatsApp group, so it is always worth a look before leaving home.

Garnier Road Car Park — St Catherine's Hill

Autumn and winter, Thursday, 7:00pm — senior threshold and hill repetitions.

The rendezvous is the car park on Garnier Road that serves Cadence at The Handlebar Cafe, not the top of the hill. If it is full, park at Bar End Park and Ride and walk round.

The hill is the club's natural strength session, and the towpath below it doubles as a wet-weather substitute for Gaterfield. Juniors stay at Gaterfield for cross-country threshold work on these evenings.

South Winchester Park and Ride

Autumn and winter, Tuesday, 7:00pm — senior road repetition training. Also the fallback when Gaterfield is waterlogged.

Meet at the far end of the car park, by the Number 7 sign. Free to park in the evening, floodlit, and a firm surface when everything else is mud. Juniors stay at Gaterfield on these evenings.

Badger Farm Meadows

Saturday, 9:00am — cross-country repetitions, hills and threshold work. Not every weekend, so check the app or the club WhatsApp group.

Meet at the bottom of Whiteshute Ridge, by the footbridge over the railway — not up on the ridge itself. Off-road throughout, so bring spikes or trail shoes; road shoes will not grip.

Winchester Athletics Stadium, Bar End

The 400m track at Bar End, alongside Winchester Sport & Leisure Park.

Used for track sessions in the spring and summer and for open meetings through the season. Track work is programmed rather than weekly — the app shows when we are there.

Harestock — Stoney Lane bus stop

First Thursday of the month, 7:00pm — the Harestock Handicap.

The start is the bus stop on Stoney Lane. Park in St Matthews Road or Vernham Road, not on Stoney Lane itself. Free to enter, no advance sign-up — turn up a few minutes early for your first one so we can work out your handicap.

Also worth knowing

  • Winchester parkrun, North Walls — Saturdays at 9:00am. Not a club session, but you will always find a WRC contingent there. Free, and you only need to register once with parkrun.
  • Sunday long runs — groups leave from various points across Winchester. Ask in the club WhatsApp group for the week's plan.
  • Monday core and strength — online, 7:00pm. No travel required.

New to the club? Come to a Tuesday or Thursday session at Gaterfield and introduce yourself — no booking needed, and your first three sessions are free.
